Deacon Michael Fekete
Deacon Michael Fekete was recently ordained by Archbishop Blase Cupich June 4th 2016. Prior to entering the diaconate, Michael studied part time for 7 years thinking he would become a full time lay minister in the Church. Along the journey, he earned a graduate certificate in pastoral studies from St. Xavier University, Chicago and in 2012 completed a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Catholic Theological Union in, the largest school of Catholic ministry and theology in North America right here in Hyde Park, Chicago.
Michael is presently the Director of International Student Services at Lewis
University where he integrates his pastoral approach and ministry background
alongside the LaSallian Christian Brothers.
Although a displaced Pittsburgher and die-hard fan of all things Black & Gold, he and his wife Mary Jo have made Chicago their home for the last 20 years. Having served in different ministerial capacities in parishes from the far North side, inner city and now here in Oak Lawn, they both have valued Catholic education and raised their son Justin through the guidance of St. Gerald school and now with the Carmelites at Mount Carmel High School.
Many know Michael and Mary Jo through music ministry (weekly masses, weddings, funerals and special liturgies) and Pre Cana Marriage Sacramental Preparation. Michael also has worked with St. Geralds’ unique and wonderful Bereavement ministry, as well as Ministry of Care.
Michael will continue his involvement at St. Gerald Parish teaching in the Religious Education program as well as RCIA, conducting baptismal preparation classes and baptisms as well as periodical Days of reflection and mini-retreats. He is sure many other wonderful opportunities within the St. Gerald faith community will present themselves as a gift and opportunity to love and serve the People of God.
